Rijeka Astronomical Center
Get to know the stars in this unique astronomy center in Croatia and the wider region. In addition to the celestial objects, from the Sveti Križ hill where it is located, there is also a wonderful view of the Gulf of Rijeka and the hilly hinterland. The Rijeka Astronomical Center is a unique facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in a former fortress from the Second World War. In 2001, a telescope protected by a movable dome was installed in one of the four towers of the fort. Today, the facility is the first astronomy center in Croatia that combines an observatory and a planetarium. Its program takes place in a spherical dome, which can accommodate 52 visitors. In it, you can watch films and presentations dedicated to the infinity of space, every day from Tuesday to Saturday. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The center has rooms for lectures and workshops, a coffee bar and a terrace with a panoramic view of Kvarner, the hinterland and the nearby medieval church. It can be reached by city bus, which is rare in such facilities. The building is fully adapted to the movement of people with reduced mobility, and the programs are adapted to all age groups.
