Trsat castle

The Trsat castle is a strategically protruding viewpoint on a 138-meter high hill that dominates Rijeka. It was first mentioned as the seat of the parish in 1288. year. Since prehistoric times, there was a Liburnian observation post at that place, from where the road from the interior to the sea was controlled. This location served the Romans very well during the strengthening of the defense system, the so-called of the Liburnian Limes, whose starting point was Tarsatika, a city-fort, on the site of today’s Old Town of Rijeka.

A colossal view of the remains of that limes on the opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as the entire area of Rijeka’s Old Town, can be seen comprehensively from the plateau of the Trsat Castle. The Trsat castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast, where the features of early medieval town planning have been preserved.

Today, the Trsat castle is enriched with new contents – a gallery space with art exhibitions, summer concerts and open-air theater performances, as well as fashion shows and literary evenings. As part of the Trsat Castle at Partizanski put 9A, there is an Info point where you can get all the information about the building itself and the city of Rijeka.
